BY ACTUATION
Self-Operated / Automatic Valves
Where the operating energy comes from — the line itself, a handwheel, or an external actuator.
Choosing Self-Operated / Automatic Valves
Self-operated valves use process conditions to generate a response without a separately commanded actuator. Check valves, pressure regulators and some temperature-control devices are different examples. Define the sensed variable and desired behavior before treating automatic as a complete specification.
What to include in the RFQ
- Identify the variable that operates the valve and its required response range.
- Provide the smallest available driving pressure or differential.
- Specify failure behavior, sensing location and maintenance access.
Selection scenario
A regulator following process pressure and a remotely commanded valve perform different tasks. For a utility branch, clarify whether the plant needs autonomous pressure control or a control-system command.
Common selection mismatch
Automatic does not mean the valve has position feedback, an emergency-shutdown function or independent safety approval.
