Safety & Relief Valves

What the valve is asked to do in the line — isolation, non-return, regulation, protection or diversion.

Choosing Safety & Relief Valves

Safety and relief valves protect a pressure-containing system by discharging fluid when the defined pressure condition is reached. Selection is based on the credible relieving case and applicable rules. Normal process flow is not the same as required relieving capacity.

What to include in the RFQ

  • Specify the protected equipment limit, set pressure, fluid and governing code.
  • Provide the relieving scenario and request a documented capacity calculation.
  • Include inlet loss, outlet backpressure, discharge destination and test/document requirements.

Selection scenario

When a pressure-reducing station feeds equipment with a lower allowable pressure, establish the potential upstream-failure load. Have the responsible engineer size and approve the protection and discharge system.

Common selection mismatch

Do not select a safety device by pipe size or a catalogue maximum pressure alone. The installation and certification must match its protection role.
